A Day at Seaton Tramway

Start your journey at SEATON and ride inland to COLYTON, one of Devon's hidden jewels, or start at COLYTON and arrive at SEATON, the gateway to the Jurassic Coast.

The three-mile route runs through East Devon's glorious Axe Valley, between the coastal resort of Seaton, the small village of Colyford and the ancient town of Colyton. The journey takes half an hour from end to end. You must alight from the tram on arrival but may return on any tram thereafter. Seaton Tramway

Seaton

Seaton Station was built in 2018 and is the first new station to be built by a heritage railway in many years and has seen highly complex railway engineering works take place, work not seen in the area since the tramway moved to Seaton in 1970. The Station is also home to Claudes Café

Seaton nestles between Beer Head and Haven Cliff and is a gateway for exploring the Jurassic Coast. The town appeals to holidaymakers of all ages with its variety of independent shops, pubs and cafes. Seaton Marshes also provide great places to explore, by the famous Electric Tramway or on foot, with kingfishers, herons, foxes and little egrets to name but a few. Situated at the mouth of the River Axe, overlooking the magnificent blue waters of Lyme Bay. Seaton offers a wonderful pebble beach with safe swimming areas and a haven for yachtsmen at the idyllic harbour at Axmouth. The South West Coast Path takes you along a magical cliff walk to Lyme Regis, just 6 miles away.

Riverside Halt

Home to Riverside Depot, the official head offices of Seaton Tramway and workshops and store of our fleet of 14 trams. Constructed in 1970 with extensions over the years, Riverside Depot was the original departure stop with the first tram departing in Seaton 28th August 1970. Inside we have a fully functioning metal workshop and wood workshop allowing us to maintain and repair the majority of servicing need on the tram fleet.

Riverside Halt is also home to our brand new Riverside deck, stretching into the Axe River, with Picnic Benches, a chance to look at the abundant birdlife and learn more about Seaton Tramway and the Axe Valley with brand new interpretation.

Please note you cannot start your journey here. Only break your journey as part of your visit to Seaton Tramway.

Seaton Wetlands Halt

Explore Seaton Wetlands and enjoy beautiful marshland and reedbeds alongside the River Axe. There are five bird hides and nearly 4km of level trails and boardwalks suitable for wheelchair, bike and pushchairs. A countryside haven, home to an abundance of wildlife.

Colyford

Although technically a borough, Colyford was granted a charter by Edward I in 1341 due to its accessibility to the River Axe which allowed sea-going vessels as far as Coly Bridge. Today it is a picturesque village with a long main street and beautiful character thatched houses. Each year in September on the Saturday closest to Michaelmas, Colyford holds its annual medieval Goose Fayre.

Colyton

Dating back to Saxon times, Colyton is a little piece of 1950's England set amongst stunning Devon countryside. The hexagonal lantern tower of St Andrew's Church provides a landmark for the town and there is a host of most interesting houses, shops and pubs dating back to medieval times dotted around the pretty town centre.

If traveling by tram, Colyton Station, Kingsdon, just a short walk from the town, dates from 1868 and is well worth the visit, not only for its famous cream teas but also for the way it has been sympathetically restored in the old London and South-Western Railway style.

Bring the Dog

Dogs are welcome at Seaton Tramway! Bring your pooch on board any of our trams and to our stations. Dogs can travel all day for £4 or £2 each way. Please be aware that dogs must travel downstairs on all trams and are not permitted on the top decks.

Please note, although dogs are welcome at Seaton Tramway, Seaton Wetlands is a dog-free nature reserve.

Registered assistance dogs travel free of charge, but must remain on the lower deck of our double-decker trams for safety reasons.

Include a Walk

Do you enjoy a nice walk as part of your day out? Seaton Tramway is surrounded by fantastic walks that you can include as part of your trip. Whether you break your journey or add it to the start or end of your day, there is a walk for you.

Seaton Wetlands is an award-winning nature reserve that runs directly along side our tram line, through the Axe Valley. With 4km worth of trail and 4 bird hides there is plenty of fresh air to enjoy and wildlife to see. Depart your tram at Seaton Wetlands Halt or re-join after your walk.

Break your journey and re-join the tram. Create your own round-robin!

Leave your tram trip at Colyford Station and cross the road and follow the lovely Coly River North, keeping the river to your left. Re-join the tram at Colyton Station and travel back to Seaton.

Visit The Beach

Seaton Beach was the first Devon beach, London tourists could access by train at the weekend when the branch line came straight to Seaton, 1868-1966.

You can include the beach as part of your visit to Seaton. Why not park at Colyton – Free parking - and take the tram to Seaton to enjoy a day on the beach. Or perhaps start in Seaton and break your day with lunch at Tramstop Café, Colyton.

And like all beach days should, end your day at Seaton Tramway with Fish & Chips on the beach!
