Why Seaton Tramway is a Must-Visit for Railway Enthusiasts

Why Seaton Tramway is a must visit for Railway Enthusiasts

Nestled in the picturesque East Devon countryside, Seaton Tramway offers an unforgettable experience for railway and tramway enthusiasts and visitors alike. As the tramway celebrates its 55th anniversary in 2025, there has never been a better time to explore this unique attraction.

Adding to the excitement, 2025 also marks 200 years of modern railways, with the Railway200 campaign commemorating the bicentenary of George Stephenson’s groundbreaking Stockton and Darlington Railway.

Seaton Tramway stands as a living testament to the evolution of rail transport and a celebration of its enduring appeal.

A Unique Heritage Railway

Unlike traditional railways, Seaton Tramway is a narrow-gauge heritage line that runs electric trams between the coastal town of Seaton and the charming village of Colyford and the town of Colyton.

Spanning three miles along the beautiful Axe Valley, the tramway offers breathtaking views of estuaries, wetlands, and rolling countryside. For railway enthusiasts, the tramway operates along the bed of the former Seaton branch line, which connected Seaton to the mainline between Exeter and London Waterloo.

Each tram at Seaton Tramway has its own story. From open-top double-deckers, perfect for summer days, to enclosed saloons, ideal for cooler weather, the variety of vehicles showcases the different needs of Modern Electric Tramways over the years.

Celebrating 55 Years of Seaton Tramway

2025 marks an important milestone for Seaton Tramway: 55 years since it started operating in Seaton, from its Riverside Depot. Originally established in 1970 by Claude Lane, a tram enthusiast, the tramway has grown from a small operation to one of the most beloved heritage attractions in the UK. Claude’s dream was to preserve the spirit of trams and bring the joy of tram travel to future generations. Today, the tramway not only fulfills that vision but also continues to innovate with events, experiences, and educational initiatives.

To celebrate its 55th anniversary, Seaton Tramway has planned a series of special events throughout the year. Visitors can look forward to themed tram rides, behind-the-scenes tours, and opportunities to meet the dedicated team who keep the tramway running. These celebrations are a testament to the tramway’s enduring charm and its ability to inspire railway enthusiasts of all ages.

On 23rd & 24th August Seaton Tramway will celebrate its 55 years with a special Gala weekend, which will see all of the operational trams in service across the weekend, ahead of the official anniversary date on 28th August. More information will be shared about this soon.

Railway200: Honoring 200 Years of Modern Railways

As part of the nationwide Railway200 campaign, Seaton Tramway is joining the celebration of two centuries of modern railway history. The campaign highlights the transformative impact of George Stephenson’s Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825 and marked the beginning of the railway era. This milestone serves as a reminder of how far rail transport has come and its role in shaping society, industry, and culture.

Seaton Tramway’s participation in Railway200 includes Riverside Depot Tours, Driving Lessons and the celebration of its 55 years in operation.

A Haven for Railway Enthusiasts

Seaton Tramway offers much more than just a ride. For railway enthusiasts, the tramway provides a treasure trove of experiences:

  1. Heritage Fleet: The original and restored trams are a testament to the dedication of the engineers and drivers who keep them moving.  Each tram has been lovingly maintained to ensure authenticity and functionality.

  2. Driver’s Eye View: Aspiring tram drivers can take the controls with the “Drive a Tram” experience, a hands-on opportunity to learn about tram operation and get a unique perspective on the railway.

  3. Workshops and Tours: Behind-the-scenes tours offer a glimpse into the maintenance and restoration processes that keep the fleet in top condition and see the tramway’s dedicated workshops.

A Scenic Journey Like No Other

One of the standout features of Seaton Tramway is its stunning location. The journey takes passengers through the heart of the Axe Estuary, a haven for wildlife and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Birdwatchers and nature lovers can spot a variety of species, from herons and kingfishers to migratory birds. The combination of heritage transport and natural beauty makes every journey a memorable experience.

At the end of the line, visitors can explore the historic town of Colyton, often referred to as "Devon’s Most Rebellious Town." With its quaint streets, independent shops, and welcoming pubs, Colyton is the perfect complement to a day on the tramway.
